TORONTO, November 18, 2019 – Canadians for Fair Access to Medical Marijuana (CFAMM) is pleased to announce Omar Khan to its board of directors. As a medical cannabis patient, industry strategist and prominent thought leader, Omar will provide advice on how the organization can re-calibrate its patient advocacy and communications strategy as Canada enters a period of minority government.

Operating since 2014, CFAMM is a federal non-profit, non-partisan, patient run organization whose mission is to put patients first. CFAMM is dedicated to improving the outcomes of the over 1 million Canadian medical cannabis patients and enabling them to obtain fair, safe and affordable access to their treatment with the support of health care professionals.

“We are thrilled to welcome Omar to our team. His experience and skills will serve our organization well as we plot out the next stages of our patient focussed advocacy with provincial and federal governments,” said Gerald Major, President, Board of Directors, CFAMM.

As the National Cannabis Sector Lead at Hill+Knowlton Strategies Canada, Omar brings focused experience in strategy development for effective public affairs and crisis communications. He has more than 15 years of experience working on issues of public policy, stakeholder management, and communications bringing a deep understanding of the inner workings of government and politics having spent more than a decade working at senior levels of the Ontario government, as well as federal and provincial election campaigns.

With a diverse policy background across healthcare, economics, regulatory affairs, and labour relations, Omar has a proven track record developing complex policy proposals, building stakeholder coalitions and leading communications plans. Recently Omar served as Chief of Staff to the Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care where he was an early member of the Ontario government’s cannabis legalization steering committee.

“I am happy to be able to volunteer my time for this important organization. CFAMM has led the fight to eliminate barriers that are preventing patients from accessing the medicine they need and I look forward to providing strategic insight into how their advocacy and communications on behalf of patients can be further enhanced,” said Omar Khan, Board of Directors, CFAMM and National Cannabis Sector Lead, Hill+Knowlton Strategies.

Informed by surveying, regular consultations with patients, patient groups, stakeholders and health care professionals, CFAMM is the primary voice advocating for patient issues in Canada. CFAMM is part of regular consultations with policy makers and stakeholders, engages provincial and federal leadership through political advocacy and digital public affairs programs, and ensures the patient voice is represented in media.
